LAS PIÑATAS 2020
This series kicked off with the display of a custom large-scale papel picado banner. The banner was designed by members of the Latinos in Architecture committee and is directly inspired by the traditional papel picado seen throughout Mexico.
The 20’x14’ banner made of a lightweight smart fabric was hand-cut and sewed together over the course of two weeks prior to installation.
The papel picado banner was installed during the last week of October 2020 for the Day of the Dead celebration at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (ESB-MACC). This installation served as an anchor and entry to the rest of the installations located primarily in East Austin.
